Exploring HTML5 & Browser Compatibility

Objectives:

  • Create a usable HTML 5 document shell including all suggested and required elements (see “Final Product,” page 23)
  • Utilize new HTML 5 elements (see page 29)
  • Explore the history of the Web by getting to know individuals who helped develop the Web’s architecture

Before you begin, please read Chapter 1 and 2. Also, pay close attention to the pages listed above and the “HTML Outlining” section of Chapter 2 (starting at p. 70).

Assignment: Write an HTML-based report discussing the influence of one of the individuals or groups listed below. Feel free to include other individuals from the company/group who are relevant to your discussion:

  • The W3C Working Group (w3c)
  • Marc Andreessen / Netscape
  • Jeffrey Zeldman / Web Standards Project
  • Blake Ross & Dave Hyatt / Firefox
  • Larry Page & Sergey Brin / Google
  • Linus Torvalds / Linux
  • Steve Jobs / Apple
  • Vannevar Bush / Memex
  • Ted Nelson / Project Xanadu
  • Bram Cohen / BitTorrent
  • Mark Zuckerberg / Facebook
  • Biz Stone / Twitter

Requirements: Provide a background of the person and/or company. Provide a history of the person’s life in technology. State the primary contributions of the person or technology. Cite your sources with proper URLs. Upload your web page to your AI Web Space under a new folder called webscripting and use the name of the person (e.g. torvalds) as the first part of the filename.

Page Requirements (and steps to take prior to next week):

  • Proper HTML 5 shell document as starting point
  • Utilize new HTML elements in Chapter 2 (at least five, no upper limit)
  • Include two to three images
  • Include as much CSS as you want. Show off. :-)
  • CITE ALL OF YOUR SOURCES OF INFORMATION AS LINKS, and USE THE CITE TAG TO DO SO (this is in ALL CAPS which means it’s important!). You should aim to have three sources for your report.
  • Attach the Modernizr Javascript file to your page/s & follow the chapters’ instructions for proper Web layout using HTML 5.
  • Preview your page in Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Internet Explorer
  • Install Firefox and Firebug on your home machine; install Chrome on your home machine
  • Validate your code against one or more validation services
